STFE 50 Tensile Membrane

Oct. 6, 2025

At this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale, a temporary library called La Libreria is turning heads for its innovative approach to redefining lightness and mobility in architecture. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Schlaich Bergermann Partner, the project merges form, structure, and purpose in a poetic way—offering a demountable, transparent reading space that can travel and adapt.

The structure’s defining feature is its STFE 50 membrane by Serge Ferrari Group—a tensile material that’s transparent, resilient, and lightweight enough to span 24 meters without heavy framing. It gives the library its cloud-like quality while maintaining structural integrity and daylighting performance. This project is as much a reflection on the future of public space and learning as it is a feat of structural design.
