CHALLENGE:SHED, a market, café and community gathering space in Healdsburg, Calif., has celebrated the land, farming, food, art and culture of Northern Sonoma County since it opened in April 2013. Designed by Jensen Architects of San Francisco, the SHED architectural style incorporates prototypical farm building forms to support the vision of SHED co-owners Cindy Daniel and Doug Lipton: to create “a stronger connection to the land and the food we eat.” For the guardrail, Jensen initially considering a trellis-like arrangement; as the design developed, they realized they were really looking for transparency and openness at the guardrail. INFLUENCE:The building opens fully to the street, inviting people in and letting the activity spill out. Central to the owners’ vision and the architectural program was a commitment to sustainability. SHED features a resource efficient prefabricated metal structure, thermally efficient insulated metal panel cladding, and a naturally ventilated and illuminated interior. SOLUTION:

Interior and exterior railings use CableRail stainless steel cables and fittings by Feeney, Inc. as the railing infill. The CableRail railing assemblies contribute to the overall sustainability of SHED because they are made with stainless steel containing pre- and post-consumer reclaimed material that is strong, yet lightweight; it is also low-maintenance and recyclable. “SHED was a labor of love for the client, something they had been dreaming about doing for many years,” says Lincoln Lighthill, Jensen Architects.
